Pressured by the upcoming midterm elections in November, Washington has decided to move from a military approach to an aggressive financial pressure campaign called 'Operation Economic Outcast', designed to completely isolate the Tehran regime. US Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, presented the plan on Monday at a press conference, making it clear that the sanctions will not only target Iran but any country or entity that maintains commercial ties with them.

The Treasury has focused on five critical sectors: digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and maritime transportation. Additionally, money laundering will be severely penalized. The US stance is unwavering. Bessent emphatically stated to the media, "There should be no ambiguity about the United States' position." The head of US finances continued with a stern warning, "Any economic relationship with this murderous regime will expose those involved to the full weight of US power," concluding directly, "It's time to choose sides."

Bessent outlined the main points of this global pressure campaign, stating, "Our goal worldwide is to cut off every economic lifeline that supports this tyrannical regime until Tehran is completely isolated." The Secretary emphasized the severity of the measures, ensuring that "We will hold everyone accountable, and this is the economic suffocation of this regime." Regarding the use of the dollar, he warned, "Any entity that facilitates money laundering on behalf of Iran will be excluded from the US dollar system. The clock has just started ticking." When asked about the possibility of sanctioning Chinese banks, a key partner of Tehran, Bessent stressed that "no one is beyond the reach of US sanctions."

Despite President Donald Trump proclaiming on Truth Social that "IRAN IS COMPLETELY COLLAPSING!!!", the ayatollah regime remains steadfast. The economic consequences on the ground are severe: the US naval blockade has plummeted crude oil exports from 2 million barrels per day before the war to just 0.4 million by mid-August. Additionally, the devaluation of the local currency has pushed the dollar to over 2 million rials in the black market. However, Iranian authorities insist they will not yield to pressure.

Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi openly questioned the effectiveness of Washington's measures, stating that "the narrative doesn't fit." Gharibabadi added ironically about the US deployment, "You say that Iran's military power has been 'dismantled,' that 100% of its military factories have been 'destroyed,' and that its nuclear program has been 'buried'," posing the question, "Is this a victory or an acknowledgment of the US's defeat?"

The effectiveness of this economic suffocation will depend on the US's ability to rally its Western allies, a complex task as it involves confronting giants like China. Meanwhile, countries like Russia, India, Pakistan, Qatar, and Turkey continue to trade with Iran. Diplomatically, Oman's Foreign Minister is scheduled to arrive to negotiate transit through the Strait of Hormuz, a key passage for the global oil market that remains blocked by Tehran.
