Authorities reported that the fire originated from an air conditioning compressor explosion.
The PIMS Chief Executive, Imran Sikandar, confirmed the death of 14 babies and mentioned that one newborn was rescued alive by a doctor. Some local media initially reported the death toll at 15.
The fire started around 7:00 a.m., according to authorities. The emergency service Rescue 112 stated that firefighters managed to control the flames after intervening in the affected area.
The intensity of the fire caused severe burns to the babies, leading authorities to resort to DNA tests to identify the victims.
Islamabad Police indicated that the families of the deceased newborns are at the scene while authorities investigate the exact causes of the tragedy.
Pakistan's Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, expressed his condolences to the families and ordered an investigation to clarify what happened.
