Social media is filled with images illustrating the devastation of the flood on Wednesday at the border between Nepal and Tibet, and how the population reacts in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy. One of these viral videos has led the Nepalese Police to arrest two men accused of stealing the gold earrings from a corpse.
Several videos are circulating showing a group of people surrounding a crater where a woman lies lifeless. Two men are squatting, trying to move the body with the help of a stick. One of the men then holds the victim's head while the other removes the earrings from her ears. As seen, no one around does anything to stop it.
The video going viral prompted the Nepal Police to identify and arrest the two men. As reported by local media, the 25 and 38-year-old perpetrators of the theft were apprehended on Thursday near the bus station in Pokhara, Bharatpur.
The case remains under investigation. Inquiries suggest that the victim was swept away in the flooding of the Bhote Koshi River, caused by a massive landslide from Tibet.
Chitwan district Police chief, Rameshwar Paudel, stated that such behavior will not be tolerated, and the Police have increased surveillance to prevent similar incidents during the ongoing rescue and recovery operations, according to the publication Ratopati.
