The incident occurred near 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue, an area that was temporarily cordoned off by authorities. Initially reported as a possible armed robbery, the investigation now points to an apparently random attack related to the mental health of the assailant.
Videos posted by witnesses on social media show the woman approaching several officers while holding two knives. The police ordered her to drop the weapons and, facing the threat, first used a taser and then opened fire.
