The tragic accident occurred in the Chatsworth neighborhood, located in the San Fernando Valley, as the television crews were flying over the area to report on a previous collision between an SUV and a municipal bus.
The crashed aircraft has been identified as NewsChopper4, operated by the company Angel City Air and regularly used by the stations NBCLA and Telemundo 52. The helicopter went down shortly before seven in the evening near a large commercial warehouse, about a mile and a half from the municipal bus collision.
Approximately two hours before the air crash, a van had crashed into the center of an MTA bus, resulting in the death of at least two people and leaving six injured. During the media coverage of this event, the helicopter fell and crashed next to a commercial building. The fire from the destroyed aircraft spread to at least four cars and two storage containers in the parking lot before being extinguished by the firefighters.
Among the deceased in the accident, reporter Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw have been identified. Additionally, spokespeople from the Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed that at least one of the fatalities was outside, in the parking lot next to the commercial building. Furthermore, at least one person was urgently transported to a hospital.
The incident generated moments of deep emotion during the live broadcast of NBC4 Los Angeles, where anchor Colleen Williams confirmed the network's helicopter crash before interrupting the transmission, stating: "Let's take a couple of minutes to think about that, process it." Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass declared, "Losing five Angelinos is very painful," and added, "And I know that this hard-hit Chatsworth community will be in mourning for some time."
Captain Branden Silverman, a fire department spokesperson, explained that "we will have to sift through the debris and see how many victims were on board, as well as identify the helicopter; we couldn't even see the tail." Silverman also detailed that "we are trying to determine how many people were inside the helicopter."
Following the deployment of over fifty firefighters and numerous police patrols, emergency and aviation authorities have initiated investigations. California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed his gratitude to the rescue teams and posted on the social network X that "our hearts are with the victims and their families."
