The injured person was identified by his family as Wilber Garcés. According to city authorities, he was shot in the torso during an incident that occurred in the afternoon in north Austin.
Councilman Mike Siegel, who was at the scene, stated that the federal agent, driving an unidentified black van, allegedly collided with Garcés' vehicle before getting out and opening fire on the car, a blue Ford that was stopped on the street.
A witness identified as Juan recounted finding the young man in the driver's seat. According to his testimony, Garcés said he had been shot in the back. The witness also claimed that the agent did not approach to help him before the arrival of the police and emergency services.
Local authorities have called for a transparent investigation into the shooting. Austin Mayor Kirk Watson and Police Chief Lisa Davis clarified that local officers were not involved in the ICE operation and only responded to control the street blockade.
The federal agent involved has not yet been publicly identified.
