One person has died and four were injured after an incident on one of the roller coasters at Six Flags Over Georgia (United States).

"Several people were injured and one person died," the Cobb County Police Department reported in a statement, as cited by CBS, specifying that the incident occurred shortly before 4:00 p.m. local time on Monday.

The media confirmed that the roller coaster involved was Goliath. The ride had stopped with passengers located at the highest point and they had to be evacuated using an emergency staircase.

The police have not specified the identity of the deceased or the circumstances of the death. Some witnesses told WXIA, a CNN affiliate, that they saw a man fall from the roller coaster.

A Six Flags spokesperson stated in a statement reported by CBS that the company was "deeply saddened" by the incident. "Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the family, friends, and loved ones of the visitor. We are also providing support to the passengers and staff affected," the spokesperson said. "We are fully cooperating with local authorities as they complete the investigation," the note concludes.

The incident occurred shortly after the company announced the permanent closure of its X2 roller coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain in California, following multiple lawsuits from passengers who had suffered brain injuries.
