In statements to journalists before traveling to Kansas to participate in a campaign event, Trump described the situation in France as "very sad" and insisted that the root of the problems is not in the schools, but in immigration.
"What is happening in France has to do with immigration. Not with schools, or anything else. It's immigration," stated the president, who claimed to have conveyed this message to French President Emmanuel Macron during his first term.
"Close your borders," Trump reminded the French leader, warning him that allowing the entry of people who, in his words, do not love the country, its buildings, or its art would ultimately lead to serious consequences.
His statements come after several days of unrest in France, with damage to public buildings and businesses, arrests, and security measures taken by the authorities. Macron, on his part, attributed the violent episodes to radical groups and criminals.
Trump once again places immigration control at the center of his political discourse, as his words reopen the debate on immigration, security, and the European response to the unrest.
In the video, the U.S. president presents his stance and calls for tougher measures at European borders.
