The 37-year-old elected senator defeated Republican Ken Paxton and took a seat from conservatives in the United States Senate.
During his victory speech in Austin, before a crowd that welcomed him with applause, Talarico emphasized the role of citizens against economic and political power. "We just proved that all the money in the world can't compete with the people of Texas," he stated.
Although he did not directly mention Elon Musk, his words come after the businessman made a million-dollar investment in favor of the Democrats, amid a growing dispute over the influence of wealthy individuals in U.S. politics.
"Power belongs to the people," Talarico declared, contrasting divisive policies with a politics based on love.
His victory represents a setback for Donald Trump, who had backed Paxton's candidacy, and alters the political balance in a traditionally Republican state. Additionally, it coincides with the Democratic victory of Gina Hinojosa in the Texas gubernatorial race.
